Repeating the test on the filled drive results in an average write of 55.7MB/s which is typically вЂњhard-driveвЂќ territory. Speeds maintain about 440MB/s until 200GB is written from fresh, then drops to a speed which wavers around 17-70MB/s. The write performance, however, is extremely poor. This performance is likely indicative of SATA 3 saturation and is much better than the Kingston A400 which slows down once filled to just 300-350MB/s.

Testing sequential reads showed an average of 518.1MB/s fresh out of the box and 517.8MB/s after a full write. The health status has dropped by 1%, with no change in spare blocks but the total erase count has reached 9307 with 160 maximum erase count and 19 average erase count of 1500 specified hence the ~1% wear. This implies that the test sequence caused a write amplification factor of 1.33 which suggests that the setup is likely to be DRAM-less and lacking in overprovisioning, thus may wear out the flash memory faster in trying to manage the lack of extra wriggle room. CrystalDiskInfoДЇresh out of the box, it had three power on counts, 100 spare blocks, 11 invalid blocks, 2 total erase count, 1 maximum erase count, 2 power-off retract count (possibly meaning improper shutdowns).ДЄfter completion of the test barrage, it registered 28 hours, 2915GB reads, 3831GB host writes and 5102GB NAND writes.

The drive was tested on my old desktop, an AMD Phenom II ењ† 1090T overclocked to 3.8GHz with 16GB RAM and a Gigabyte 890FXA-UD7 motherboard running Windows 7, so as not to interfere with my production machine. They havenвЂ™t even gone to any lengths to put on a warranty-void seal, showing just how inexpensive these units are.

The 7mm-tall drive is at least made of a metallic shell which should improve thermal dissipation. A very spartan package indeed, with a very pedestrian three-year warranty as well. There is a вЂњMushkin enhancedвЂќ label in the rear and the cardboard insert, but thatвЂ™s about all for inclusions. The drive is visible through the front with its yellow вЂњgo-fasterвЂќ stripes.

The drive is packaged inside a clear clamshell with no security whatsoever вЂ“ just flip it open and off you go. Perhaps it would be a good match for the Kingston A400 which I recently reviewed and thoroughly disliked, being priced very similarly at about AU$111 for the drive and close to AU$120-130 when including postage. We donвЂ™t get much of the Mushkin brand down in Australia, but IвЂ™ve seen their products reviewed occasionally, so I thought IвЂ™d give it a go. As I had a вЂњshoestringвЂќ budget to spend and wanted something relatively capacious, I settled on the Mushkin Source 2 1TB (MKNSSD21TB).
